CanToo Sydney Morning Herald Half Marathon

Yesterday the Sydney Morning Herald Half Marathon was held, I was on the start line with all the other participants and what felt like hundreds of runners in orange running for Can Too and in particular my team from the South West.

Personally a touch of nostalgia for me as this was my first endurance event I ever participated in 10 years ago, back then not sure of what to expect. What I could not have foreseen on that day is how many endurance events I will then go on to complete or the fact that I would enjoy and love the sport so much that one day I would be coaching athletes for this same event.

Well the run was not about me. I have been inspired over the last 14weeks coaching my team as their enthusiasm and eagerness was infectious from the start and always present at every session. What makes the group special (and all Can Too groups) is that the majority of participants have never run a half marathon before, many of them were not even regular runners at the start, but more importantly each participant was driven on by a goal bigger than themselves in that they are all raising funds for Cancer research and this is their primary reason for being there. I think this is why the experience is all the more rewarding as the participants are firstly giving of themselves and the return satisfaction and fulfilment of completing the half marathon is all the more rewarding and personal

As I say the team is an inspiration to be apart of, everyone finished and ran strong the entire way around. Training for and running a half marathon is not an easy task and over the last 14 weeks we have been on highs and lows and persevered through the mental battle of endurance events, but with the support of the entire team everyone pulled through and is stronger for the experience. well done team, looking forward to the next round.

Can Too Week 7

7 weeks are now completed of the 14 week plan for the SMH half marathon. The South West pod continues to train well and has just finished a tough training week.

During the week all participants completed their 2nd 5k Time Trial at the track. with significant improvements from everyone. The group is now running from 31 seconds to 1min 42seconds quicker per k over the 5k’s. these time gains are massive and can only be achieved by consistent training over the last 7 weeks and sticking to the goals of each session. well done to all the pod for this improvement.

To top the week off we all participated in the Lindfield 10k fun run yesterday (Sunday 28 March). It was a great occasion to met runners from the other CanToo pods and support each other in this event. The run can be summed up in 1 easy word BRUTAL! the only flat section was the half a lap around the oval at the end, the rest was either up hill or down hill, it was unrelenting and absolutely no opportunity to recover from the hills and find a good running rhythm. We all finished the run with smiles on our faces and could laugh about the toughness afterwards.

I am looking forward the last half of the training and seeing the additional fitness and speed gains that will be achieved. Well done on all the achievements to date

Steyning Half Marathon – Maybe it is about the gear?

After my bold statement last week (it’s not about the gear) with Ellen racing a trail half marathon without the specialist equipment and still winning, she decided to try racing with the right equipment and set off on Steyning half marathon at the weekend in her new trail running shoes.

All I can say is I think they must still be in pristine shop condition as she flew around the course, perhaps too scarred to get the new shoes dirty? One thing is for certain is she had a clean pair of heals as she again was the first female finisher and managed to smash the course record which had stood for the last 5 years by 10 minutes. Congratulations and well done Ellen

Endurance Life Half Marathon – It’s not about the gear

I am pleased that I have recently increased my coaching numbers of which one of my newer members is Ellen who is training for the London Marathon and Norseman xtreme  triathlon. Ellen completed her first event since our coaching began last weekend and has provided me with a blog (with a little coercion) of the training to date and her race report.

“The coaching programme from Trifocus does not leave much energy for such activities as blogging…  The sessions have been structured and with very clear instructions, so I can’t say I have been able to use any excuse to avoid just getting on with them.  Tongy might be in another hemisphere, but there’s no escaping the note of glee in the turbo instruction that after the first (long) set, there should be a second repeat ‘with no rest’.  1.30 hour endurance runs in to work do a lot to keep up demand for almost the entire annual production of Scotland’s porridge oats.  Run sessions on the track have been a complete novelty for me, and it’s been invaluable to have Tongy’s guidance on pacing.  Not that this does anything to lessen the embarrassment felt when struggling in close proximity to the gazelles who tend to turn up to Battersea track.  I am beginning to see why one guy there calls us marathon runners ’zombies’.  Luckily this was all forgotten last weekend when pounding the punishing terrain of the South Devon coastline in a half marathon trail race.  Unfortunately the stunning views went largely unappreciated as we fixed our concentration on the ground ahead.  Equipped with road shoes, I provided regular entertainment to all other participants in trail shoes while I aquaplaned where the mud was smooth and the hills steep, and almost left my shoes them behind in the deepest mud.  However I wonder whether, after coming in first woman, this might be a technique to recommend?!’

Well done Ellen for a great performance, I do get a good chuckle picturing you running without any specialist trail gear, but still showing a clear pair of heels, no doubt you would have miffed a number of competitors, it just goes to show it is not about the gear!
